And here would be a coyote playing in the snow. Running, leaping over drifts, digging in the snow and throwing it up in the air with her muzzle...

She was warm and enjoying herself greatly, but it wouldn't be too long before she headed inside and shifted back to make herself some hot chocolate and doze by the fire.

[Derek went back up to the porch and opened the door for her. He followed her inside and tried to shake off the cold before going to the kitchen. The coffee was ready by then and he got down two mugs before asking.]

Want some coffee?

Mercy headed for her room to shift and throw on a pair of sweats before emerging.

Not a coffee person, but thanks. I'm going to make some hot coffee.

She tossed him a towel in case he needed it to dry off from the melting snow, and rubbed at her hair with another.

Thanks for soming out to play. That was fun.

Yeah that was fun.

[He was surprised to hear her voice and turned around, already sipping at the steaming cup of coffee. He caught the towel with one hand and moved to the fireplace to start a fire. It would feel really nice to sit next to one right now.]

She smiled at him.

You read my mind. I figured I'd play for a while then come in and get a mug of hot chocolate and stretch out in front of the fire for a while.

You know what they say about great minds.

[He casts Mercy a grin and only towels off once he has the fire lit. Its warmth really feels good against his skin.]

Mercy came in with her mug and stretched out on the floor in front of it.

Oh, so very nice!

[Derek settled down on the floor next to her, sitting crossed-legged close to the fire and he hums his pleasure at the feeling.]

When I was little we never had a fireplace. But my grandma did. Loved going over there in the wintertime and for holidays. So when I got my own place in Virginia, I made sure it had a fireplace. They just make a house feel even more homey, I think.

Mercy smiled up at him.

I grew up in the wilds of Montana. We always had a fire in the fireplace. I used to help my foster father chop and stack wood. He always used to say it warms you three times. Once when you cut it, once when you stack it, and then when you burn it.

[He sips at his coffee. Her father's words make Derek grin and nod.]

I like that. Sounds like your father was a wise man. Or is he? He still around where you're from?

She looked down, sadness in her eyes.

My foster father. I never knew my biological father. He died just a few days after he and my mother got together. And no. He... committed suicide after his wife died.

I was 14.

[He felt bad about the touchy subject and asking the question, but he hadn't known. He reached out to rest a hand on her shoulder and squeeze lightly.]

Yeah, no one should have to go through that.

[She smiled up at him again, a little sadly, but a real smile.]

It was tough, but I got through it, and you know what they say about whatever doesn't kill us...
