Got up in the wee hours of the morning to sneak into the kitchen and do a little cooking since I just can't seem to sleep lately. But everything had... changed, so I didn't dare touch it. So I went to Plan B.

I've never had a bedroom this clean. I'm not sure I'd be able to sleep in here even if I could sleep.

I'm afraid of what I'd find if I went to the garage, so I think I'm going to go sit out under a tree somewhere and read a bad historical romance if anyone is looking for me.

What if I am looking for you?

Then I'd probably tell you where to find me.

Then hypothetically, where may I find you if I were interested in doing so for whatever reason?

I might, hypothetically, be found about half a mile from the beach house on a blanket under that really beautiful tree in the clearing.

Should you be looking for some unknown reason that is.

Is there room for one more on your blanket?

Hypothetically?

I could be convinced to make room.

I wonder if hypothetical lunch would do the trick. One does not like to eat it alone if there is an alternative.

If there were, say, iced tea with this hypothetical lunch?

I'm sure the outcome would be positive.

For myself, I prefer the Long Island variety. But for you, I don't see why not.

Then Long Island for you and regular for me?

I'm happy with that.

[ooc: Definitely!]

True to his word, Robin tracks Mercy down some time later with a large picnic basket-- an actual basket --draped over one arm, and a pair of dark sunglasses draped over his nose. She appears to be absorbed in her book when he arrives, so he whistles as he approaches, staring across the short distance.

"This tableau would look even better if you were wearing a string bikini, you know."

He'd been upwind so she hadn't smelled him coming. She looks up, a bit startled, then smiles at him. "Robin. Not sure I'm actually the string bikini type, sorry."

Inviting himself to sit, Robin comes over and settles down onto the blanket beside her, dropping the open basket and holding a thermos of cold sweet tea out for her. Nestled in the basket are a pair of tuna salad sandwiches, some cheese and crackers, grapes and a bottle of wine. Because iced tea isn't particularly Robin's thing. If it seems like he's always eating when he meets her, it's probably because he's just always eating.

"How can you say that when you've got the body for it? It is to weep. You are a tragedy, Mercedes."

She couldn't help but laugh. "Please. I've totally got a jeans and t-shirt body. I don't think I even own a regular bathing suit."

The food looked wonderful, but it was the sweet tea she pounced on. "Oh, perfect. I didn't think to bring more than one bottle of water with me and the heat has me parched."

She takes a long drink, then turns to him. "And how are you, Robin?"

Ignoring the food for a moment, he stretches himself back on the blanket in a spot of sun shining through the tree and folds one ankle over his erect knee before adjusting his sunglasses.

"I am perfect, as always. And you, for some reason, are getting away from it all."

Mercy smiles at the picture he makes there in the sun. "Perfectly you, yes."

"I just wanted a break from it all, you know?"

Tilting his glasses away from his eyes for a moment, he stares across at her and waves a hand at the food.

"You do not need a formal invitation to eat, especially if you won't be wearing a swimsuit any time soon. Now, what are you taking a break from, if I may ask?"

"Wait, if I was going to wear a bikini I'd need a formal invitation?" she teases.

It didn't take long for her to choose and take the first bite of a sandwich, chewing carefully before she answers the rest.

"Kyle's very unhappy with me. I've hurt him and... I don't know how to make it better. Or rather, I know, but it's not something I'm willing to do."

Still not sitting up, he reaches into the basket and snags a branch off of the bunch of grapes, surveying it before popping one into his mouth, giving himself time to think. Not long, of course-- he is never at a loss for words.

"I suggest that you stop feeling guilty, if that is the case. Pick one or the other-- submit to what you believe would make it up to him or if you are not willing, do not be willing, but also do not feel guilty for making that choice. It is not worth it otherwise."

"I'm not submitting to anyone. I don't even do that for the Alphas - not for something I don't agree with."

She takes another drink of the tea and sighs. "But Kyle's very good at the guilt. And he has plans for the ultimate in guilting."

"Well if you want him to stop, stop acting like you deserve it."

He gives her a small shrug before folding his arms under his head and settling back into the sunny patch as well as possible with a yawn.

"So easy to say."

She watches him quietly for a few minutes as she finishes off half of the sandwich. "Are you sure you're not part cat?"

What was plan B? Clean your room?

Historical romance...I can't help laughing at that.

When I'm stressed I cook or clean. Cooking was out and Ianto keeps the house so spotless that my only recourse was to clean my room. Ridiculous, huh?

Well, I was a history major. I like to read them and make fun.

"Only if you are the sort of person who agonizes over a decision before and after making it. I am not."

He picks at the small branch of grapes for a few seconds more before continuing, talking with his mouth full.

"And I was alive long before cats existed. So it would be more accurate to suggest that a cat is part Robin if you see a resemblance."
