Having a car to work on is one of the best things ever. If anyone's looking for me, that's what I'll be doing.

This last curse wasn't bad. Just... weird. I was doing some weird R&D work and putting together some prototype of... something.

Don't even know who the people were, but I sure felt like I did then.

Anyone up for doing something after work?

He turned half-way through his pace, toward the sound of the voice, a small smirk on his face. "Mercy?"

"That would be me," she said with a smile.

His smirk turned into a smile. "Well, may I just say, you are even more delectable than I imagined."

"Oh yeah, totally guaranteed to put me at ease that you're not looking to feed off me," Mercy teased.

He laughed. "Well, I would've said cute, or attractive, but I don't think you would've appreciated it as much."

She tilted her head to one side for a moment, considering. "You're probably right," she admitted. "Wouldn't have gotten as much of a smile."

"And it's a very good smile to get." He met her eyes, dark to his gray. "So, you wanted to go something?"

Mercy felt a bit of a tug of attraction there beyond the normal, but nothing he seemed to be doing intentionally and nothing she couldn't ignore - at least for the moment.

She smiled at him. "Just wanted to get out and go somewhere other than back to my room. Any suggestions?"

"More than I could name." He ran a hand through his hair. "Been to Lux yet?"

Mercy laughed. "Oh, once or twice," she drawled. "Kyle let me earn some money filling in for people who were out sick with the plague thing. But it's a nice place and I'm glad to go there. As long as you don't mind that one beer's my limit."

And she rarely even finished half of one of those. She'd learned in college just how dangerous drinking could be to one who had to keep their secrets.

"I think," he said, falling in to step beside her, "I remember you mentioning something about that. One beer, though? Where's the fun in that?"

"The fun is in not feeling miserable the next day or forgetting what lies you're telling people to hide what you are," she said, turning her head to watch him. "Learned that pretty early on."

Thomas nodded, a look of shock on his face. "Oh, so you're not a shape-shifting coyote girl?"

Mercy laughed again. "All right, yes, yes, I am. But I never claimed to have told you all my secrets. And I think you can see where anywhere other than here, that would be an important secret to keep."

"Do you think anyone back home knows I'm an incubus?" He quirked an eyebrow.

"Not many, I'd guess," Mercy admitted. "But I'm thinking you probably have some ability to blur people's memories if you need to. At least, the vampires back home can."

"We can," he admitted as they continued their walk. "It's not something I do."

Truth.

Mercy nodded. "Good." She wasn't sure his ability would work on her anyway, but better not to have to find out the hard way.

"Some of the secrets I know belong to other people," she explained. "And while here I'm pretty willing to answer any questions you might have about me... there are still things about others I shouldn't say."

She looked sad for a moment. "Not that it may end up making any difference in the long run, but if I do ever get home I want to be able to say I still kept them."

He nodded. "I can respect that." Hell, he knew more than a few people here whose secrets could get them in a lot of trouble. "So," he said, changing the subject. "Besides getting greasy, what do you like to do?"

Mercy laughed. "It's not the getting greasy, it's the fixing something or building something I enjoy. Besides that, well... I'm pretty boring. I like reading historical romance novels, I bake cookies and brownies when I'm stressed, go for long runs in my other form... That's about it. At home my work keeps me pretty busy. Here I'm going crazy trying to find enough to do.

He laughed. Loud. "Historical romance novels?" He trailed off in to chuckles. "You...you must really love Henry."

"Hey," Mercy laughed, jostling him a little. "I was a history major. I like to make fun of the inaccuracies. And who's Henry?"

He laughed and shoved her back, keeping his strengh in check. "Careful. Someone might think you're flirting."

"As for Henry Fitzroy," he said, ticking points off on his fingers. "Henry is the bastard son on Henry VIII, a vampire, and a romance novelist."

"Yeah? Better be careful yourself!" she said lightly.

"Wow. Seriously? He's a writer from your world?"

He kept laughing. This chick was fun, he had to admit that. "Henry? No. Met him here."
